“Pages Soaked in the Brew”

Hang around with writers for any length of time and you might think that all we care about is coffee. It’s what we talk about on our blogs and Twitter and Facebook—how we need more coffee, how much we love the coffee we’re currently drinking, or (rarely) how we drank too much coffee and now can’t sleep.
It’s the only socially-acceptable vice left for a writer nowadays. Writers just don’t drink alcohol like they used to, at least not while actually writing. Most of us don’t want to run with the bulls or ride big motorcycles or even be the life of the party. We want to sit quietly and write, a warm beverage at our side. Sure, there’s a strong minority of us who drink tea, but most writers go straight for the hard stuff. Coffee feels more sophisticated than tea, more grown-up, more serious—especially consumed without the refinements of cream and sugar. Sorry, tea drinkers. Black coffee is just more badass.
As co-authors, we drink plenty of coffee separately, but we drink a stupid amount when we’re together. We tend to write in all-day marathons, meeting at one of our houses. Whoever is hosting will brew a big pot in the morning, and we drink it all day. By mid-afternoon, all that caffeine catches up to us and we get rather silly. But do we do the sensible thing and switch to water? No, we pour another cup of java and type faster.
And when we can’t write at home? Then there’s society’s gift to writers everywhere—the coffee shop. Coffee shops give us an escape. Free from the distractions of home. Free from the people who want to interrupt our thoughts. At the same time, there are enough other people around that we feel the gentle tug of peer pressure. We call ourselves writers, we’re in the perfect writing environment, so we’d better actually put our fingers on the keyboard instead of staring off into space.
Together, we’ve published three novels. Each one is dedicated to our amazing spouses. But we wonder sometimes if we should dedicate a book to our favorite beverage. Every page of our novels has been soaked in the brew. Every paragraph has been written between sips. Every word has been typed with fingers energized by the gentle buzz of caffeine.
And be sure to tip your barista on the way out.
